The Delaware State Hornets defeated the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks 3-1 on Apr. 26, taking an early lead in the first inning and maintaining it throughout the game.
The game matters for both teams as they near the end of their regular season, with Delaware State improving to a record of 25-16 overall and 14-6 in conference play. Rhyannon Stanley started as pitcher for Delaware State, completing seven innings while allowing one run on seven hits, walking one batter, and striking out three.
Delaware State scored first in the opening inning with Brylin McCray hitting an RBI double with two outs. The Hornets added two more runs in the seventh inning, including one driven in by Angie Ordonez’s single. Maryland-Eastern Shore managed to score once before the end of the game but could not overcome Delaware State’s lead.
Game statistics show that Delaware State’s most productive inning was the seventh when they scored twice. The team went three-for-eight with runners in scoring position and limited Maryland-Eastern Shore to zero-for-seven in similar situations. Mianna Lopez Del Haro led at bat for Delaware State by going two-for-three with a double.
Looking ahead, Delaware State will travel to Norfolk, Virginia for the MEAC Softball Tournament beginning Wednesday, May 6.
