The Delaware State Hornets softball team won both games of a doubleheader against the Chestnut Hill Griffins on April 8 in Dover, Delaware.
The victories improve the Hornets’ record and highlight strong performances from several players. The first game ended with a close 4-3 win for Delaware State, while the second game was an 8-0 shutout.
In Game 1, Mianna Lopez Del Haro led the offense by going 3-for-4 with two triples and two runs batted in. The Hornets scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure a walk-off victory after trailing earlier in the game. Lacee Canada started as pitcher and picked up the win, while Allyson Fonollosa contributed with nearly five innings of shutout relief.
Game notes from the first matchup indicate that four Hornets had multiple hits, and both Chandler Martin and Lopez Del Haro recorded extra-base hits. The team out-hit Chestnut Hill by eleven to four and went three for ten with runners in scoring position.
In Game 2, Yeannelly Sosa threw a one-hit shutout, striking out seven batters over seven innings. Zaelyn Harding led at the plate by going two for two with two runs batted in. Nevaeh Terrell stole two bases during this contest as well. Delaware State’s highest-scoring inning was in the third when they scored three times.
Looking ahead, Delaware State will travel to face North Carolina Central University for a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference series beginning Saturday, April 11.
