The Delaware State Hornets secured a 3-2 victory over the Coppin State Eagles in nine innings on May 9. The walk-off win came during Friday’s game, sending the Hornets forward in postseason play.
The game was decided in extra innings after both teams traded runs late. Rhyannon Stanley earned the win for Delaware State out of the bullpen, pitching one inning and allowing one run without giving up a hit. Kristin White started for the Hornets, throwing six innings and surrendering one run on four hits while striking out five batters.
Chandler Martin led Delaware State at the plate, finishing 2-for-2 with a home run, a walk, and an RBI. Karly Cain also contributed by going 2-for-4 with a triple. Mi’Shon King added an RBI and scored the winning run.
Delaware State opened scoring in the sixth inning when Martin hit a two-out solo home run off Emily Quintero. Coppin State responded to take a brief lead before Delaware State rallied with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to clinch victory as King crossed home plate.
White struck out five hitters during her outing. The Hornets outhit Coppin State seven to four and limited their opponents to zero hits in twelve chances with runners in scoring position. Delaware State pitchers faced thirty-two Eagles hitters overall, recording eight strikeouts across six ground balls and eleven fly balls.
Looking ahead, Delaware State will face South Carolina State University in the semifinals for the MEAC Championship on Saturday, May 9 at 11:00 AM.
