Delaware State University’s women’s tennis team lost its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener to Norfolk State on April 16, falling by a score of 7-0.

The match marks the beginning of Delaware State’s conference play, an important phase as teams compete for postseason positions. The Hornets were able to split courts during doubles play, with junior Catherine Goldman and Sia Mahajan earning a 6-2 win at No. 2 Doubles against Daroszewska and Sabadie. However, Norfolk State secured the overall doubles point by winning at both No. 1 and No. 3 positions.

In singles competition, Norfolk State maintained momentum and claimed all six matches in straight sets. Senior Lucia Casas Blas competed at the top spot but was defeated by Yurkova with scores of 6-3, 6-3. Freshman Alba Benedito fought closely in her first set at No. 4 singles before losing to Klimchuk, while freshman Hannah Watkins and Maite Bou Safont also came up short in their respective matches.

The full results showed Delaware State unable to capture any singles victories: Goldman lost at No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-1), Mahajan fell at No. 3 (6-2, 6-0), Benedito was defeated at No. 4 (6-4, 6-1), Watkins lost at No.5 (6-2, 6-2), and Bou Safont rounded out the lineup with a loss at No.6 (6-2, 6-1).

Delaware State will look to rebound as MEAC play continues in their upcoming matches.
