The Delaware State University women’s track and field team recorded several top-10 performances at the Princeton Sam Howell Invitational on April 4.
The event saw notable achievements from multiple athletes, including a school record in the 5000 meters and a first-place finish in the hurdles. These results reflect ongoing progress for the Hornets’ program during this outdoor season.
Rebecca Janse set a new Delaware State school record in the 5000 meters, finishing with a time of 17:46.27 and securing the top mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Miriam Okwudibonye led her teammates by winning the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.35. Valerie Ashamu placed second in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.72 meters, while Sanaa Virgil finished fifth in the triple jump with an effort of 11.97 meters.
The relay teams also performed well at Princeton. The quartet of Leah Powell, Mariah Winfield, Kahlia Smith, and Marianah Lipkins took third place in the 4×100-meter relay with a time of 46.58 seconds. In addition, Okwudibonye joined Annil McIntosh, Morgan Wallace, and Smith to secure fifth place in the 4×400-meter relay.
Other strong performances included Joy Taiwo’s seventh-place finish in the women’s 100-meter hurdles and Aniyah Smith’s seventh place in javelin throw. Mariah Winfield was eighth overall in the women’s 100-meter dash; Kirja Hickman finished ninth in discus; Kahlia Smith was ninth and Annil McIntosh tenth respectively in the women’s 400-meter dash.
These results demonstrate consistent improvement for Delaware State as they continue their outdoor track campaign.
